Yesterday my friend and I bought a $20 microwave at a thrift store. It is my intention to create a website based solely around this microwave. We put it through a test run tonight. We took some videos of the action, but they didn't turn out very well because of weird reflections (we probably should have waited til it was darker outside). Anywho, I took some before and after pictures with my mom's digital still camera. I now wish I had taken some "in the process" pictures, but I'll make sure to do that next time.

Neither my friend's mom nor mine would let us carry out our sinister experiments with the microwave indoors. My mom settled with letting us use my back yard.

We had tested the infamous microwave egg explosion legend in my friend's microwave before we bought our own. It was the deciding factor in realizing how cool it would be to own our own microwave.

Those people weren't lying. Eggs explode like pipe bombs!

A broader view of the egg massacre.

Here we see a tupperware container full of popcorn kernels, some powdered donuts, a couple eggs, and of course, a bingo dauber. We added a couple marshmallows after this picture as well. I also filled it with a bit of water thinking that would make it all heat up better.

Not much happened. I think putting the water in might have been a mistake... as it seemed to have absorbed all the energy. The marshmallows barely even did anything...

But the bingo dauber sure did something. We had taken the screw-on cap off of it before putting it into the microwave. The little felt/sponge ball thing that soaks up the ink and is used as the actual daubing mechanism popped off after a few minutes, and then every few passes, the dauber squirted that ink stuff at the microwave window in almost the exact same spot every time. The dauber's activity sorta died down after a while and we stopped the microwave.

Beautiful...

And here's an egg and six marshmallows in a pickle jar.

This closeup looks almost artistic. I couldn't figure out how to turn the flash off on my mom's camera, so I tried covering it with my finger, and it ended up just flashing the top half of the picture. Kinda dramatic looking!

After the marshmallows expanded to fill almost the entire jar, we were starting to wonder if the egg was going to do anything, or if it had already done something but was muffled by the marshmallows. But then it exploded, sending the giant pickle jar's contents of expanding marshmallows flying straight up through the hole in the top like a volcano. It was awesome and we're saving the jar to do this one again (but with pictures of progression and a quality video).
